Membership Opportunities

As this agency is entirely staffed by volunteers we rely upon members of the community for staffing.  With the increase in demands from work and family commitments, new members are always welcome and needed to help provide these services to the community.

Not every member is an interior firefighter.  There are ample opportunities for those who don't want to go into burning buildings to offer a hand.  Members are needed to drive equipment, run the pumps, fill air bottles, direct traffic, give medical attention, and provide other vital support operations.  We also have a need for EMS members and associate members.  These members would contribute to our company in many varied ways.

Our members range from 16 year old Junior Firefighters to retired personnel of more sophisticated age.  Many of our members have gotten involved, planning on only taking a small part in firefighting operations and as time has passed, have discovered the desire to further their skills.  Several firematic and/or EMS members have moved on to positions with paid fire departments, locally like the Binghamton and Endicott Fire Departments to a more national level with the Washington DC Fire Department.  Other members have gone into jobs in the private sector with national organizations like the Insurance Service Organization, ISO, which provides guidelines for firefighting and insurance regulations.  We encourage anyone who may have even a slight interest in becoming a firefighter, EMS provider, or in just volunteering their time to more value our community to stop by and explore the opportunities provided by becomming a member.

Member Requirements

All members of the Chenango Bridge Fire Company are required to attend at least half of the scheduled monthly meetings.  Firematic and/or EMS members must also attend half of the regularly scheduled trainings that are designed to enhance and maintain skills necessary to respond to the needs of our community.

As firefighting is a serious business we do have certain requirements to be an active firefighter.

Firematic members are required to attend a basic course in firefighting by the State Office of Fire Prevention and Control.  These courses are provided locally and are usually one night a week for several weeks.

EMS members respond to medical emergencies, motor vehicle accidents, and provide medical support functions for fire activities.  EMS members are required to hold a current certification or enroll in a New York State Certified First Responder, Emergency Medical Technician course, or higher level provider program.

Associate members are individuals that do not wish to provide firefighting or EMS services, but do wish to assist our community in some way.  Associate members can volunterr any unique skill that they feel would be beneficial to the Chenango Bridge Fire Company.

The Chenango Bridge Fire Company also provides several opportunities for training outside the local fire company.  State and County courses are offered continuously throughout the years as well as the opportunity to attend classes at the New York State Fire Academy at Montour Falls, NY and the National Fire Academy in Emmetsburg, MD.  This training is provided by the Chenango Bridge Fire Company at no cost to the member.  Many members find these training opportunities an excellent chance to improve personal skills as well as meet other emergency services personnel from around the country.

Application Process

The application process is simple.  Anyone interested in becomming a member must complete a written application and be interviewed by the Board of Directors.  For firematic and/or EMS members a physical exam will be conducted by the Broome County Health Department.  The applicant is then presented for membership and when accepted goes through a probationary period where they become familiar with the duties and requirements of membership.

For membership information please stop by the Chenango Bridge Fire Cpompany, Station 1, on any Monday night at 7:00 PM or the first Wednesday of any month at 7:00 PM.  Any of our current members will be glad to assist you.

Thank you for your support!

We will welcome any help you want to give!
